Choosing an SDS drill: a quick guide

The leading names in the SDS drill market in the UK are DeWalt, Metabo, Makita and Bosch (the inventor of the SDS system). The second tier features well-known brands such as Hilti and Hitachi. In addition to these you’ll find good drills from brands such as Ryobi, Draper and Erbauer. And finally there are also own-brands from retailers such Homebase and Wickes.

At SDS drill we concentrate on reputable SDS drill brands as we believe that most of our visitors are searching for an SDS hammer drill that provides a reliable performance and gives a good pay-back for the cost for your orinal investment.

Should you choose a cordless or corded SDS drill?

For most people this will be a case of deciding what you need the drill for. For site builders, joiners or electricians, a solid cordless with a spare battery is essential. A quality cordless drill will be pricey – anywhere between £250-£500 – but it’s a worthwhile investment.

For tradesmen operating in small spaces, a less expensive cordless may suffice (however if you intend to chip out for cabling or sockets, an SDS drill with a chisel feature is a must). Tradesman who use a drill a few times a week may opt for corded. For DIY use, a budget cordless model may seem attractive but if your thinking of spending under £150, you’ll be better off with a leading brand corded model.
