How to Install a New Carpet

Though the average man considers himself quite handy, this is seldom the case. The plumbing, the wiring, malfunctioning appliances — what exactly can he handle on his own? If he is lucky, he might be able to fix the television. But when it comes to home improvement projects, most men are lost, without a clue.

Fortunately, we were able to find one simple project that nearly any man can complete without killing himself. It is a simple, yet essential project that a bloke can look upon with pride for years to come. Are you ready? It'’s the carpeting.

Okay, it might not be the most glamorous of assignments. But it certainly is necessary. So, let us start with the tools that you will need. The following tools are required: a stapler, a utility knife, a hammer, measuring tape, a chalk line, knee pads, gloves, goggles, tackless strips and a rolling pin. Yes, a rolling pin to put down carpets. Now, it is time to tear up the old carpet. This is not as easy as it seems. Carpet, as you will soon discover, is stapled to the floor. So, you will need to use quite a bit of strength to get the edges up. But after the first few inches are off the floor, all you have to do is roll it up.

Next, you must apply the tackless strips on the perimeter of the room. These strips help keep the carpet in place. Once they are down, place the underpad on top of the strips and staple them down.

Finally, it is time to install the carpet. But first, you must measure the room and add a minimum of six inches to both sides. Once the carpet has been laid down, you can cut off the excess so that the rug fits perfectly. A standard utility knife can be used to finish the job.
