How to Install a Television Mount

Flat panel televisions are quickly replacing the bulkier free-standing sets of the past. These new units not only offer a superior picture, but they are also much lighter and take up less space. The reason they take up less space is because they can be mounted on the wall. In this article we are going to explain exactly how to hang a flat screen set on the wall.

There are two basic types of television mounts—a standard mount and a swivel mount. The standard mount is really nothing more than a heavy piece of metal that screws into the wall and the back of your television set. The process is fairly simple, but you will need a specialty tool.

A stud finder will be required to locate the ceiling joists. The studs are what will actually support the weight of the television. After all, if you screwed a forty-pound set into the wall, it would fall down. The set must be screwed into the ceiling joist to support the weight. Only then can you start flipping through the tvguide

The mount itself will include a series of screws and brackets that can be easily attached to the back of the set. That is the first step. Next you must find the ceiling joist and screw the mount directly into the wall. The television will then be secure.

The other type of wall mount, the swivel mount, is popular in hospitals and in rooms that cater to large audiences. This mount allows a user to reposition the set and to move it from side to side. The installation process is the same as the standard set.
